SAN GIMIGNANO
The town of 100 towers, saffron and Vernaccia
Tuscany on foot
half day / full day
San Gimignano dominates the upper Val d'Elsa, and it is probably for this very reason that the Etruscans in the III century A.C. decided to live in this place. The town is mentioned for the first time already in the X century, the era to which the first city wall belongs to. The finest era of this town was the XII-XIII century, characterized by unique architecture which made San. Gimignano inimitable.
The old town has been declared World Heritage by UNESCO. A real gem, crossed by the Via Francigena, where it is easy to remain enchanted by the tall towers that climb into the sky, but which leave space to churches, palaces, alleys and squares, all strictly authentic and evocative. Like every other Tuscan reality, San Gimignano is not just history.
The surrounding countryside is a continuous alternation between country roads, woods, olive trees and vineyards. It is here that Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG, is produced, a white wine capable of making its way into the San Giovese region. It is here that even today, as in the Middle Ages, saffron is cultivated .
